I had my first anxiety attack at 16 when I went into my interview at a local Dairy Queen. I had them each interview when until I was 20, applying for my graduate assistant position.
What changed from 16 to 20 years old? I started freelancing.
This is Lily the Lab, the love of my life.
The opportunity to start freelancing just kind of fell into my lap and then the opportunities kept coming. My first contract paid $10, and I was selling multi-million dollar companies new logos for $50 -- but, I was thankful. I was thankful to be making more than West Virginia's minimum wage at the time, $8.75.
Then, I started blogging for an apparel brand. After that, I picked up small side projects here and there mainly working with that agency that first contracted me, until COVID happened.
The work stopped. I focused on my schooling and working as a graduate assistant in the IT department at my University.
After spending too much time on TikTok and getting tired of taking money from my savings each month, I decided to dive head first into building a business online.
I create my Instagram and an account on Fiverr. Flash forward 2 years, and I am making almost $200k per year with no plans on slowing down.
Now, I want to share this with you. There is nothing special about my journey -- no crazy rich parents, no fancy car, no expensive house. I live in my childhood bedroom, driving a Rav4 hybrid, and my parents have pretty normal jobs.
I graduated -- 2 degrees. 4 years. Debt-free. I was able to do this thanks to freelancing (and one heck of a work ethic).
The problem, no one was hiring. My agency I had been counting on for new projects was radio silent and all of the jobs I applied to were dead ends. I was offered one, single job, but they decided to rescend their offer because I have COVID and couldn't start to 2 weeks.
Sucks, right?
